Block Party Explainer
A Promotional Animated Explainer Video
CLIENT/INDUSTRY: Lancaster City
DELIVERABLES: Digital Explainer video
SOFTWARE: Adobe Illustrator, After Effects
TARGET AUDIENCE: Lancaster Locals
I was tasked to script, storyboard, recruit voice actors and create a promotional explainer video animation for the City of Lancaster Department of Neighborhood Engagement. The idea of the video was to raise awareness/reach out to locals about Block Partys, the city’s resources available to help with said block parties, and encourage neighborhood interaction to help build a stronger community. To ensure the video can reach out and adequately communicate to locals, there is an English and Spanish versions and narration of the video.
CREATING THE SCRIPT
Before I could start sketching anything out, I had to do some research and review the How to start a Neighborhood Group PDF on the Lancaster City Neighborhood Engagement Webpage for the animation's script. The script is based primarily on the PDF and was sent to voice actors after my supervisor's approval and translated a copy into Spanish
After the Ideation/storyboarding of the script, an animatic was created to estimate how long the animation would be, the timing of specific scenes and if the frame's movements would flow fluidly and correctly. Before the voice actors were found/hired, I had to do a rough voice-over for the animatic.
WIDE CAST OF CHARACTERS
It was decided a fun cartoon-styled animation would be best to help bring across this message in a fun and welcoming way. Given the growing diverse nature of the city, a diverse range of characters was created and used to reflect this.
